Why is Regular Deck Maintenance required?

Even the most robust hardwoods (jarrah, blackbutt and ironbark) require some maintenance to preserve their appearance and maintain their superior durability and longevity.

Over time, exposure to the sun (and humidity and weather) can remove the colour pigments in the wood, causing a greying effect. While some purposely leave their deck to age into a weathered grey look, to maintain the unique colour of your timber deck you will need to undertake regular maintenance. Regular deck maintenance will also help to prevent rotting, splintering, bowing and other issues with the timber.

How often should re-coating or re-oiling be done?

The standard for periodic timber deck re-coating / re-oiling is once every 6 month to 2 years. The exact recommended period between fresh coats of oil depend on the species of wood and the environmental conditions. Rainfall level, humidity and amount of exposure to the sun can all affect the frequency of re-coating and number of coasts required.

Key Benefits of Timber Deck Restoration

Maximum Enjoyment and Appeal. A well cared for or freshly restored deck is something to be proud of and enjoyed. Our timber decks provide us with a cherished outdoor space that is a valued part of our Australian lifestyle (especially in our idyllic mid-north NSW coastal and sub tropical environment).

Increased property value and appeal.
An professionally cleaned and freshly re-oiled timber deck has the potential to maximise appeal and can be a smart move when preparing a house or home for sale or rental.

Regular maintenance and cleaning prevent small issues becoming bigger more costly issues. Proper executed, regular timber deck care and maintenance can mean all your deck needs is periodic cleaning and re-application of decking oil. However, left unprotected and to deteriorate over time, wooden decks can then require more costly repairs, develop structural issues, and when a deck restoration is undertaken then it requires sanding back to raw timber (and that can only be done twice).

Quality Workmanship & Care

Professional, Experienced deck care and maintenance, driven by customer satisfaction.

Cleaning - Proper cleaning (high pressure cleaning, scrubbing, washing with a brightener (that help oil absorbsion), or using an environmentally friendly liquid stripper, will help preserve the appearance and structural integrity of your deck, and this is a critical step before re-application of oils.

Sanding - Sanding may be required, but it removes 3-5mm of timber and hence can not be done too many times (2 maximum). So with regular deck care we can instead use use an environmentally friendly liquid stripper to strip the old coating, stains and mold from your decking, while retaining the board thickness  and strength (while not harming your garden, lawn, pets or your kids).

Reapplication of Deck Oils - Fresh coats of decking oil should only be applied to properly cleaned and prepared deck, with the right applicators (no lambswool applicators please!) and in the right way (brush on, brush off technique).

Repair Boards, and Loose / rusted Screws - these need to be replaced as they can lead to not only look bad but can lead to even more serious structural issues.
